Hi all,
My name's Ken-ichi and I'm new to the list (though I know some of
you). My friend Sarah and I checked out the Wildcat Canyon Trail
from the Tilden Nature Area to Rifle Range Road this morning and saw
plenty of stuff. Sadly, we didn't see the Calliope Hummingbird folks
on this list had sighted their a week ago, but there was plenty of
compensation. My favorites were the male Lazuli Bunting singing near
the Rifle Range Road intersection, and the Black-headed Grossbeaks
interspersed along the trail.
We saw a Buteo we were unable to identify with what appeared to be
clipped secondaries on both wings. It was slimmer and a little
smaller than a Red-tailed, had pale, very lightly striated underwings
and tail, with slightly darker coloration on the anterior edge of the
wings. Anyone have any idea what this might have been?

PS. There's a new bird-related project that was just released by Ken
Goldberg, a professor at Cal affiliated with my program at the UC
Berkeley School of Information. CONE Sutro Forest (http://
cone.berkeley.edu) is a game that lets you identify birds at a feeder
over the web. Great way to watch birds when you're stuck inside!
