Painted ladies have been on the wing for over a month here 240 miles or so
to the south, so it makes sense y'all are seeing them. Sulfurs, and whites
are out and I saw my first blue today. I have also seen west coast ladies
along with the painted ladies. No American ladies yet, but they remain rare
here.

P.S. Anyone interested in learning about butterflies should think about
coming down to the Kern Valley Spring Nature Festival. Friday's keynote
speaker is Fred Heath, who will be presenting "An Introduction to the
Butterflies of the Kern River Valley and Southern Sierra Nevada"

INteresting this is so early; likewise, the thought that the orange
butterflies recently seen by Kay L. were thought to most likely be Painted
Lady, which normally show up en masse around Easter, so this too is early -
potents of what? Since I thought the barn swallows came from parts north of
here ? Help me on this Hugh; Painted Ladies definitely come up from the
south, though, or else I'd say we're in for a warmer season if the plants
down south are already drying out. Does this make sense sort of ? We're
still waiting for Kay to look again for confirmation on which butterflies
she saw; so this is a little premature of me to conjecture, I guess
cheers!
