    Hi, Folks.
Saturday I biked up the ridge at the Mt View
Cemetery on the Oakland-Piedmont border, enjoying the
view and the plum trees in full bloom. I climbed past
the fence at the top (south side) and climbed on up in
    the open semi-wild area.
The 2 highlights were finding a California thrasher
(which I managed to spot while trying to identify some
sparrows flitting around in the bushes) and watching a
northern (red-shafted) flicker take a dust bath. What
fascinated me about the latter was that the flicker
poked at the dirt with its beak in order to loosen and
break it up before fluffing its feathers, lowering
into the dirt and getting to work.
      Also seen--among others:
    spotted towhee,
    California towhee,
robin (they were all over the place down in the
    cemetery proper, too),
    chestnut-backed chickadee,
    golden-crowned sparrow,
    white-crowned sparrow,
    possible Lincoln sparrow,
    scrub jay.
    Cheers,
    Alan Howe
    North Oakland
