    Sapsuckers DO interbreed, perhaps especially Red-breasted x Red-naped.  
    There was a very good article on the topic by Stephen Shunk in the ABA 
    magazine "Birding", in the May/June 2005 issue:  "Sphyrapicus Anxiety: 
    Identifying Hybrid Sapsuckers"
