Greetings EBB'ers,
Yesterday morning (1 February 2007), ca. 9:50 AM, six BLACK SKIMMERS were
sitting on the rocky breakwater that juts out into Ballena Bay from the Crab
Cove section of Robert Crown Memorial State
Beach, EBRPD. Five of us (FLATLANDERS Walking Class from Acalanes Adult ED.,
Walnut Creek) and one other local birder (I didn't get her name) found them.
This was during a medium high tide, thus other resting/loafing birds were on
nearby rocks: Willet, Black Turnstone, Black-bellied Plover, Western (and
Least?) Sandpipers.
I had earlier first reported this flock (11) on 24 Jan. 2007 and Dave Quady
reported (3) them for yesterday, see below for Dave's directions:
EBBers:
At noon today three Black Skimmers were loafing on the small rock
breakwater at the entrance to Ballena Isle Marina. Park at the end of
McKay Ave in Alameda, and walk to the water's edge at Robert Crown
Memorial State Beach. This was the same general (at least) area where
Phil Gordon reported 11 birds a week previous.
The breakwater was also a loafing spot for numerous other water birds
just after high tide, which today was 6.5 ft at 9:36 am at the Golden
Gate.
Phil E. Gordon
