This weekend, I left the cozy confines of Livermore for some birding around the Bay.
On Friday morning, at MLK Shoreline, all 4 rail species were spotted at the boardwalk that extends into Arrowhead marsh:: Clapper, Virginia, Black rails, as well as Sora. Clapper were particularly cooperative, standing out in the open and posing for pictures.
Friday afternoon, I went to Tilden's Jewel Lake in search of the reported Varied Thrush. They weren't hard to spot. Along the PackRat trail there were 12+ thrushes. Every other bird seen was a Varied Thrush.
Sat. at 2pm, I went to Ano Nuevo to see the warbler spectacle at the brussel sprout farm. 100s of Townsends are still everywhere. Also spotted were displaying Ruby Crowned Kinglets (M), Common Yellowthroat (F) and American Redstart (F). I realize this is an out-of-county report. Regardless, I never would have heard of this warbler gathering if someone hadn't reported it here. I think an occasional heads-up on an out-of-county sighting is appropirate (and appreciated) if the sighting is spectacular or unusual enough.
Thanks for all the tips,
Bill Clark
