    Dear Birders:

Today's scheduled GGA field trip to Jewel Lake yielded up no rarities
but a good number of winter and resident species and 12 enthusiastic
participants. After another cold night the welcome sun produced lots
of avian activity including a large group of band-tailed pigeons that
settled in the upper branches of the conifers at the end of the lake.
On the lake itself were a pair of buffleheads (Bethany Facendini, the
park naturalists who leads the weekly "Tuesday for the Birds" trip
reported that a group of Common Mergansers were recent visitors).
Probably the most active and abundant species was the Ruby-crowned
Kinglet, everywhere scoldinge and once revealing his bright red crown.
The Varied Thrushes were more abundant than usual.
