    Greetings birders,

This morning about 9:30am some movement in a tree in my front yard
caught my eye. It did not look right for one of our resident Nuttal's
woodpeckers, so I got my binos and discovered that it might be a
red-breasted sapsucker. This is a new yard bird for me.

However, upon reviewing my field guides, particularly National
Geographic, I wondered if it might be a hybrid red-breasted/red-naped
sapsucker, instead. It had lots of red on and around the head as a
red-breasted should, but also appeared to have some black marking on the
cheeks, which made me think it might be a hybrid. Other than that, all
of the other field marks seemed to point to a red-breasted.

My house is in northwest Walnut Creek, west of the 680 freeway and near
    Buena Vista School.
