I'm wondering if anyone can help me ID a bird that visited my backyard near
Mills College in Oakland the other day. Its song, while unfamiliar to me,
was so distinct that I thought I would be able to identify it from my CD's--but
no.
The song had three distinct parts: a fairly brief, single-nonmusical-toned
"chatter" (some might say "trill"); an ascending whistle; and three bell-like
notes. The bird sang the song about ten times before flying away.
I had a very poor view of the bird. It was about the size of a large
sparrow, probably brown (the light was bad), with a sizable tail that bobbed
lightly as it sat, mostly obscured by a branch, in the crook of a tree. I could
see no markings; neither could I see the head.
I'm hoping this means something to somebody. Thanks for reading!
