Hi all:
I led a field trip for SFFBBO to Arrowhead Marsh this
morning. Highlights included:
6 Cackling Geese w/ the Canadas in the main lawn area
adjacent to the main Arrowhead Marsh.
Continuing House Wren along the fence line 100 yard
south of the Garretson Point Nursery.
Burrowing Owl, absent on the last two trips was
prominent on this one.
Female Barrow's Goldeneye courting a male Common
Goldeneye. Well, that's what it looked like. Don't
shoot the reporter.
Clark's Grebe and Western Grebe looking like they
wanted to hook up (scientific term) as well.
The "typical" phenomenal looks at Clapper Rails at
high tide and superb looks at one lone Sora.
So, about this Eurasian Wigeon. If we're all looking
at the same bird. The bird at the south end of the
fresh water ponds closest to the big parking lot.
Hanging out with the American Wigeon flock.
Maybe someone can educate me about juvenile Eurasian
Wigeons.
This bird has the upper face of a Eurasian Wigeon, but
the lower face of an American Wigeon. i.e. Orange
upper face and speckled gray lower cheeks and chin.
Crown stripe is not white, but certainly leaning more
towards white than orangey-tan. Base of bill is
missing the black border. Flanks are mottled
gray-mauve, chest the same. Back is grayish, but as
with most of the other fieldmarks on this bird looks
intermediate. So, maybe there's another Eurasian
Wigeon hanging around this flock that we missed, or
maybe this is a juvenile? But my thinking is that this
is a hybrid EurasianXAmerican Wigeon. All opinions
welcomed.
Good birding,
