Dear EBBers: I wanted to relate to you a true-life
birding adventure that happened to me today.
    Travelling South-bound on 880 about 10:30 am I saw a
Canada Goose walking on the freeway shoulder
dangerously close to the right lane. I turned off the
freeway at the 16th Ave. Exit and parked the car. I
walked over towards the bird that was about a hundred
yards north of the exit. There was an 8 foot high
cyclone fence between me and the bird. I thought that
I could start walking towards it herding it towards
    the exit.
This actually worked. As far as I could see the bird
did not look injured, but something was wrong with
it. It constantly edged out in to the right lane.
Exiting motorists blew their horns at it which helped
to move it back towards the fence.
About this time a CHP car with it's lights on pulled
up behind the bird. So with me walking down the
fence=line and the CHP guy slowly moving ahead and
clicking his mike we moved the bird towards the exit.
We got the bird about 50 feet away from safety and
it seemed to stall. It then started to walk back up
the freeway. At this point I walked around the fence
and between me and the CHP officer I was able to catch
it. It was very powerfull but if I kept it's wings
    down I could controll it.
I got in the back of the CHP car and he took me to
the Oakland Animal Shelter on 29th Ave. There we put
    the bird in a cage.
The CHP guy took me back to my car. I went down to
Arrowhead Marsh and saw a few Soras and Virginia Rails
    in the rain.
