Spotted at Heather Farm Park, Walnut Creek, on the north pond, the one with
reeds around the edges, about 4:30 -5 p.m. Wednesday:
One mature black-crowned night heron in reeds, no more than 10 feet from the
path, on the west side of the pond, and two immature black-crowned night
herons perching in trees on south end of the pond.
Two green herons flew over the pond, and one landed in the tree on the west
end very close to us. Good sighting, even without binoculars.
A snowy egret in ditch to the west of the pond path.
About four pairs of buffleheads on the pond, and two pied-billed grebes,
almost always spotted there.
Other common Heather Farm pond residents seen:
cormorants, probably double-crested, though no breeding plumage observed.
red-winged blackbirds
golden-crowned sparrows
coots
Canada geese in huge numbers
domestic geese
mallards
At a yard thistle feeder in south Walnut Creek:
Lots of lesser goldfinches and a few American goldfinches. No pine siskins
this year, though they dominated the feeder last year.
