I was lucky several weeks ago to see one Pileated Woodpecker near the =
Skyline Gate of Redwood Park. It was on a dead snag on French trail, =
midway between West Ridge Trail and Tres Sendas trail. We watched for =
ten minutes as the bird hammered spectacularly and sent large pieces of =
debris flying in the air as a large hole developed. I have been back =
several times to this area, but no luck in finding the bird again.

Many thanks to the people who recently posted their sightings of the =
Pileated woodpeckers on Phillips Loop trail near Skyline Gate.

This time we headed straight for Phillips Loop off of East Ridge trail =
from the parking lot at Skyline Gate and heard hammering after walking =
only about 5 or 6 minutes. Looking west we saw one Pileated Woodpecker =
at least 20 feet up working near to the top of a snapped off dead snag. =
Just as we were observing the first Pileated Woodpecker we heard =
hammering to the east side of the trail, and were able to locate a =
second Pileated hammering near the base of a live pine tree, about 3 - 4 =
    feet off the ground!

This pair of Pileated Woodpeckers were a true treat for the holidays.
