Happy National Don't Buy Anything Day!
I, too, visited Albany yesterday and was pleased to
see the Eurasian wigeon still there among his American
cousins around 2:30. Nice bird! As already noted there
were lots of shorebirds and other ducks. I spotted a
few pintails and a female green-winged teal, her green
shining in the sun, standing asleep on the mud; there
may have been others, but I didn't pick them out.
Has there been anymore about the reported northern
waterthrush at Lake Merrit? Or the Redwood pileated
woodpecker? I was up there Tuesday late afternoon and
saw and heard nothing of it--and the woods seemed
unusually quiet in general. Some California towhees, a
few chickadees (heard) and, perhaps a winter wren,
though my glimpse was so short and the woods dark
enough that I can't claim it.
    Cheers,
    Alan Howe
