    Dear Birders:

    At noon today I stopped by the quarry lake adjacent to the Rockridge =
    Center parking lot, following Bob Brattigan's directions in an earlier =
    posting. I'm assuming that when he visited a couple of weeks ago there =
    was still open water. Now the lake is completely lidded with duck weed =
    and there were no birds on the water. But the tall eucalyptus that grow =
    along the top of the rock wall cast wonderful long shadows acrossn the =
    chartreuse surface. I continued along the fence toward the east end =
    where I could hear the waterfall. Adjacent to the waterfall, perched at =
    the end of a downed tree over the water, a green heron with neck =
    outstretched never moved during the time I was there. Below where I =
    stood, a male red-shouldered hawk, maintained his perch on a nearby =
    pier. Except for occasionally turning his head, the hawk never moved =
    either.=20

    A few yards away, cars and trucks came and went, the speaker system at =
    Longs produced its continuous messages while the hawk and the heron =
    remained unperturbed.=20
