    Kathy,
The missing birds are probably around a slough in East CC County. A good =
day of winter birding is very likely here.
        On Bethel Island's Stone Road Dec 16, 2004 I birded with a friend =
and saw 150+ Ruby Crowned Kinglets in one tree in the same minute, =
further down the road were 5 variant Oregon Hairy Woodpeckers. For 3 or =
4 months, around the island was a pair of probable northern goshawks. I =
have not seen or heard of them yet this year. I have seen them on jersey =
    Island in 2000.=20
Red tailed, Red shouldered & white tailed Hawks, Swainson pair, =
Fergs, and Turkey vultures are roosting on Willow road now.
Frequent are mallards, rock and mourning doves, western scrub jays, =
lots of black phoebes, white-crowned sparrow's, Audubon's yellow rumped =
warblers and Oregon junco's. Crows, Tri, Bi and Red winged Blackbirds =
flock in groups of about 50 birds. Many Gulls, Foresters, Caspian and =
    least terns.=20
Last month a pair of Great Horned Owls were vocal and perching in =
new places. Northern Saw Whet Owls are here & Barn Owls are found.=20
Breeding pairs and flocks of Great Blues, Black Crowned Night & Green =
Herons; Snowy and Great Egrets. A dead tree on Piper Slough has a wealth =
of Cormorants perched, with nearby white pelicans. We have 10,000+ Coots =
and more Common Moorhens on Franks tract until January (Sugar Barge top =
deck is a great viewing place) then they disperse.
Kingfishers, Jays, Robin, Bushtits, Hermit Thrush and Varied Thrush. =
I am looking for a Harlequin Duck, maybe on its way back from Berkeley =
to Stockton. And of course our own 2 families of Sandhill Cranes fly =
around in the fog, and sometimes in the day.=20

Don't wait because the trees are being cut down and fields changed =
drastically to build homes with a levee configuration like New Orleans!! =
Have we all gone mad creating a hazardous waste tragedy like that =
    possible in our drinking water?=20

I usually take my walk around Lake Temescal in the morning. Today i =
    was
there in the afternoon, when the afternoon sun brought out the birds =
    on
      this cool day.=20
At the south east end of the park is a children's playground and an
adminstrative bldg. Going nw toward the lake there are some picnic
tables and bushes on the right side of the path. The Hermit Thrush was
eating the red berries; it is a very shy bird, hiding in the bush and
flying out to take one berry and returning to its perch. Also Hutton's
Vireo in that area. Also usual birds at the park:
coots, ruddy ducks, mallards, pigeons, western scrub and steller's
jays, black phoebes, white-crowned and song sparrows, ring-billed
      gulls.=20
Not seen today but often there:
DC cormorants, gb heron, sn egret, gr egret, gr heron, bc night heron,
      anna's hummer, robin, kingfisher.
Ruby-crowned kinglets and buffleheads are usually there in the winter.
This is a great little park sheltered from winter winds, where you can
see lots of birds fairly close. It's about 1 mile to walk all the way
around and it's paved on one side, too.=20
Lake Temescal is accessed on the south from Broadway Terrace just off
Hwy 13, and on the north from the section of Broadway that parallels
Hwy 24 from Patton to the tunnel.
