    I saw a buteo exactly matching your description a few days ago from my 
    window in Pinole.  I also saw blackish wing-tips and "windows" in the outer 
    wings.  It was being bombed by a crow.  My first reaction was 
    "ferruginous".  The bird dipped behind the houses, and I was unable to 
    relocate it.
    
    After studying my books, I decided that it was just as likely a very pale 
    juvenile red-tailed hawk (see Sibley's picture of the juvenile Krider's, 
    for example).
    
    Tantalizing, either way.  I chalked it up as "one that got away".  I 
    suppose the odds are slim that it was the same bird...
