Today a group of 5 friends (led by Bingham Gibbs) headed to east county =
and had an absolutely beautiful day as follows:
First stop was Round Valley Reg. Pk. (east of Clayton on Marsh Creek =
Rd.). In no particular order we saw: Great Horned Owl, Says Phoebe, =
PHAINOPEPLA (1 male), Hermit Thrush (lots), Bewick's Wren, Bushtit, Blue =
Bird, Cooper Hawk, White-crowned and Golden-crowned Sparrows, =
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Titmouse, White-breasted Nuthatch, Morning Dove, =
Shrike, Mockingbird, Red-winged Blkbrd, Anna's Hummer, Starling, Scrub =
and Stellar's Jay, Spotted Towhee, Crow, Nuttal's Wdpkr, Flicker and =
Red-breasted Sapsucker.
Second stop: Los Vaqueros Reservoir (same area): Merlin, Kestrel, =
Meadowlark, Barn Owl (in the big red barn at headquarters), White and =
Golden-crowned Sparrows, Lark Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, House Finch, =
Shrike, Says Phoebe, LEWIS WOODPECKER (approx. 17 between headquarters =
and Interpretive Center), Lesser Goldfinch, Osprey, Rock Wren (3 around =
bathroom at Interpretive Center), Song Sparrow, Red-shouldered Hawk, =
March Wren, Ruby-cr. Kinglet, Says Phoebe, Black Phoebe, Scrub Jay, =
Crow, Flicker.
Third stop: Clifton Court Forebay (SE of Byron off J4): Tree Swallow, =
Kingfisher, Gr. Blue Heron, Gr. Egret, Pied-billed Grebe, Coot, House =
Sparrow, Bufflehead, Ruddy Duck, Clark's Grebe (with very young which =
seemed strange), Western Grebe, Gr. Scaup, White Pelican, DC Cormorant, =
Ring-billed Gull, Calif. Gull, Eared Grebe.
Fourth stop: Holey Road (SW of Clifton Court Forebay off J4): =
Long-billed Curlew (about 15 in field), Pipit (lots), Cowbird, Starling, =
Shrike, Burrowing Owl (1), FERRUGINOUS HAWK (1).
Fifth stop: Marsh Creek Reservoir (NW of Byron, off Marsh Creek Rd.): =
White Pelican (1), Canada Goose, Cackling Goose, Pied-billed Grebe, =
Moorhen (9), Coot, Black-necked Stilt, Gr. Yellowlegs, Long-billed =
Dowitcher, Killdeer, Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Red-shouldered =
Hawk.
We ended the day with lots of White-throated Swifts flying overhead at =
Rudgear Road overpass in Walnut Creek.
