Yesterday, the Friends of Sausal Creek did a quarterly bird monitoring of the
watershed. It was a beautiful fall day and large numbers of kinglets were
conspicious. The best birds of the day were black-throated gray warbler-male and
an adult Cooper's Hawk "trying" to catch squirrels. The squirrels were game
and raced around, not terribly concerned as the hawk made passes at them. A
raven referered and broke up one pass. A feral tom cat watched from the sidelines,
interested in the outcome. This hawk landed a ran along the picnic table after
the squrrel under it. And while I watched, it occurred to me why accipters
were called 'chicken hawks" - not because they took chickens, but because they
ran like them on their long yellow legs and with their skirts hitched up.
