I was surprised to find an adult Rufous-crowned Sparrow in my
    backyard this morning.

The adult Rufous-crowned Sparrow has the rufous crown, smooth
/ plain gray breast, and the striking dark lateral throat-stripe.
The white eye-ring is also very visible and has a prominent /
thick rufous eye-line. It didn't call while I was observing it.
Though what prompted my investigation was an unfamilar bird
    call note.

It was hanging out with 2 1st winter (?) sparrows that have streaky
breast and darker plumage on the wings, no visible color on crown,
neither rufous nor gold. Can't confirm the existence of an eye-ring
    on the other two sparrows.
The three sparrows are more or less the same size: chunky and big,
    with long tail.
The three of them were in my yard from 9:30AM (when I noticed
them) until 11:30AM (when I checked them again).

I live in Hayward near Garin Park.
We have birds such as Western Bluebirds (breed in Garin's bird boxes)
and Say's Phoebe (in Winter) in our yard.
The more exotic sparrow before this is Lincoln's.
    This bird makes my day.
(I should work from home more often and check out who's in my backyard.)
