I walked the Bay Trail between Meeker Slough in Richmond and the
intersection of Rydin Road and Central Avenue (near Costco). This area is
in the new Eastshore State Park. I had one Red-necked Phalarope at a
shallow pond on the north side of the trail west of the South 51st street
trail exit. There were four Black Oystercatchers on a sandy beach further
toward Meeker Slough. This was about 3 PM and the tide was high.

Just south of Central Avenue along the Bay Trail, there are two shell mounds
that were built up for loafing birds and possibly Least Tern breeding. The
birds were really loafing here, and it was interesting to see about 700
Western Sandpipers and 200 Black-bellied Plovers on one, while the other was
occupied by a mix of Willets, Marbled Godwits, Black Turnstones, etc.

Yesterday there was a Red-necked Phalarope just south of University Avenue
west of Frontage Road, near the small beach behind the restaurant. This is
also part of the new park.

Golden Gate Audubon will be running a year-long bird census in the new park,
starting in October. If you wish to participate, contact Tara at
tzuardo at goldengateaudubon.org. It should be a lot of fun.
