There has been some activity here recently regarding Coopers Hawk's =
nests in the East Bay. For the record, the pair that had nested around =
Russell and Pine Streets for a number of years returned again this year. =
They used a nest located in a large elm on the north side of busy Ashby =
Avenue, about 200 feet west of Pine. This nest was also used in 2003, I =
recall. Last year, the pair nested in an elm on Pine, midway between =
Russell and Ashby. (I'm assuming that it is the same pair.) =20

The elm trees in this neighborhood are reaching old age and are slowly =
being removed, not a good sign for future hawk nests in the area.

In mid June, we observed two adults and 2 fledgling chicks, one actively =
branching. One adult was absorbed in the nest, dissecting a dove, while =
the mate stood watch on a higher branch. The nest appeared to have been =
    abandoned around July one, however,
on Sunday, I happened to see what appeared to be the two juvies in the =
vicinity of Webster & Pine, about a block from the next tree.
