    Hi, all.
A coworker just came and asked me to ID a bird that
was sitting on the luggage rack of her car. By the
time I got there, it was in a nearby flowering locust
    tree. Turns out it's a juvenile Cooper's hawk. I
walked fairly closely under the tree and it just
watched me and after a couple of minutes hopped up a
couple of branches. I checked again just now and it's
moved to the top of one of the light fixtures in the
staff parking at the Rockridge Library in Oakland.
I'm a little surprised that it hasn't been
intimidated by my attention--and that it sat on the
roof of a car, for that matter. Perhaps it's
relatively newly fledged and still figuring things
out. I suspect our current population of sparrows and
Brewer's blackbirds (?) may have attracted it.
While I'm on, I was up at Sibley bright and early
this morning. The mist was pretty thick, so I couldn't
see the eagle nest clearly, but there were no signs of
activity. I did see song sparrows, a small flock of
Wilson's warblers, an American goldfinch or two and a
few house finches. A rather vocal spotted towhee with
an insect in its mouth circled around me in the brush
a few times--don't know if it was avoiding it's nest
while I was around or if it was just inquisitive.
There were lots of other calling birds--whose songs I
couldn't id, but it was great to be out there in the
early morning quiet with all the bird noise.
    Cheers,
    Alan Howe
