Hi all,
This morning Frances Oliver and I saw the Harris's Sparrow at Sunol Regional
Park. It took an hour in the rain to find it as the birds refused to come out
of the bushes by the outhouse. Eventually, though, it did pop up right there
so be patient.
A trip up to Little Yosemite offered little in the way of birds but just
amount of water rushing through there was worth getting soaked.
Some Harris's Sparrow trivia:
There was at least one previous Harris's Sparrow at Sunol Regional Park, way
back in 1972.
Surprisingly enough, there are probably close to 20 Alameda Co. records of
Harris's Sparrow.
Finally, the first California record of Harris's Sparrow was in Alameda
County. It was collected by Emerson at Hayward 10/28/1900. Because of the presence
of so many collectors associated with UCB in the first half of the 20th
Century, at least 4 of the first 10 for the state came from Ala. Co.
Good birding,
Steve Glover
