Hi E.B. Birders,
On Saturday afternoon, while stopped at a traffic light at the corner of Rheem Blvd. and Moraga Way in Moraga, my son Rob and I watched a Belted Kingfisher land on a streetlight hanging out over the road. Being a bit distant from any water, I told my son how interesting this seemed to me. The kingfisher proceeded to fly from the pole to a steep, bare earth hillside, within 20 feet of the pole, and repeatedly strike the top portion of this earthen slippage area with his/her bill. After three or four attempts the bird flew off.
I have read that Belted Kingfishers may excavate nest in banks far from water, but this is the first time I've seen one make the attempt to dig a hole away from water and so close to a busy intersection.
All the Best Birding,
Denise Wight
