Hi again, all.
Thanks for all the responses to my question about
the alleged yellow-crowned night heron. Now I'm really
nervous about my tentative ID--I didn't know the
species was quite that rare and that therefore it's
all the more doubtful that I saw one.
I was particularly taken by the bill on this bird.
It appeared blue streaked with black on the top. Its
eye was yellow with a slight hint of red.
Unfortunately I didn't especially note the lores. The
neck and breast were streaked with brown. I was struck
by the striping on the nape and neck and that, when
the bird stretched, the neck seemed longer than I'm
used to seeing on black-crowned. (Of course, how often
does one see one with its neck stretched out?) There
may have been a hint of a grayish streak on the top of
the head, which, of course, could hint more of
black-crowned than yellow.
I'm quite open to the possibility that I might have
misidentified a black-crowned juvenile. I'm not all
that secure in my solo skills, especially in
situations like this, which is why I asked for input.
(And I haven't check off yellow-crowned on my personal
list yet.) However, this bird just didn't quite seem
to fit with what I saw in Sibley for the black-crowned
(though I didn't have Sibley with me at the lake; I
had to go by a quick sketch and notes I made and check
the book when I got back to the car on the other side
of the lake).
Again, thanks for all the responses. If anyone
comes up with anything anything anywhere near
definitive on this bird, please do let me know.
Cheers,
Alan Howe
