    Hi, all.
It was nice weather for ducks--and us other
    creatures--today (1/22/05).
The hooded merganser pair was there in all its glory
in the middle pond, swimming and dabbling among (if my
memory serves me) common goldeneyes, buffleheads,
canvasbacks, ring-necked and ruddy ducks, pied-billed
    grebes and coots.
The south pond had many of the above, especially
canvasbacks and goldeneyes. There were also a number
of gadwall crossing the pond in a group. (To the
fellow list member I met, yes, they birds we had in
question were gadwalls.) There were a good 15-20
black-crowned night herons in the brush and trees on
the east side of the pond.
Another treat was a very bright male Townsend's
warbler low in some trees along a small marshy area
just off the trail on the east side of the north pond,
where I'd stopped to watch an Anna's hummer.
After biking home to north Oakland, I spotted a
rather faded Cooper's hawk in our walnut tree. For
some reason, all the mourning doves that have been
hanging out there the last couple of days were nowhere
    to be seen. ;-)
    Take care,
    Alan Howe
