At the Berkeley Aquatic Park this morning (Wed,10 AM), we were fortunate =
to find the pair of Hooded Mergansers at the western end of the south =
pond, as reported by several others. The male was moving his head from =
side to side, as if to show off his cheek spots, and dunking his head in =
the water. The female watched intently, her crest fully extended. =
After about 5 minutes of this display, the female lowered her head so =
that her beak was level with the water and approached nearer. She dove =
under and mating took place. Immediately after mating, the male raced =
away about 30 yards. The female remained in place, frequently ducking =
    her head. =20

Many species of waterfowl can now be seen at Aquatic Park, including a =
pair of Northern Shoveler in the south pond.
