Hi birders,
Yesterday afternoon (12/12), I found a wintering Chipping Sparrow at Lake Del
Valle in Livermore. I also saw two Cacking (Aleutian) Geese mixed in with
the large flock of Canada Geese that hang out on the mudflats and lawn area.
Other critters of note included a lone Bonaparte's Gull along the shore at the
mudflats and a Striped Skunk in a picnic area on the west shore.
A couple of weeks ago, there were 3 American White Pelicans at Del Valle, the
first I've ever seen there. There's a flock of 200-300 that have been
wintering at the Tracy Sewer Ponds just over the Altamont, so maybe they were just
visiting for the day.
Also wanted to mention that last Saturday (12/4), when I went for my second
look at the Swamp Sparrow in Springtown (found it near the reeds near the
trail's dead end), I also saw two sub-adult Golden Eagles. They spent some time
perched in a tree across a field roughly northwest of that spot.
Good birding,
Kathy Robertson
