While trying to key out a particularly persnickety mushroom this
afternoon, I chanced to look up and see a flock of small birds in our
liquid amber tree. Grabbing my binocs, I was delighted to discover that
it was a large flock of pine siskins, one of the few birds that are
actually able to feed on those prickly seed pods (for an incomparable
experience, try stepping on one of those suckers barefoot, like I did.
Once.) Hanging upside down, 80 some birds were workin' the pods, then
flying down to the ground, availing themselves of the fresh pools of
water, or so I thought. Then I realized that they were also gleaning the
seeds that had been cracked out of those formidable pods by passing and
parking cars. I guess that proximity to us lumbering humans is not all
bad for the birdies. So glad to be of help.

Happy New Year to you, and all of my feathered and featherless friends,
