We were away Sept. 24 - 29, and during that time the White-crowns showed up and the last Hooded Orioles departed, so it's officially winter here in Livermore (at least for our yard). Also the flickers are here, which I think of as a winter yard bird.

Also this weekend there was a very large accipiter showing what looked like a white rump that shot through just after spooking all the birds in the yard. My impression was that it was rather big for a Cooper's. Could we have a Goshawk out here? Unfortunately I did not see the underparts and did not have my binoculars with me (for shame!).

    >We got our first WC's of the year this past weekend
    >Also from our yard, we can see a nesting pair of Red-Shouldered Hawks in a
    >Eucalyptus tree on Live Oak. Don't know if they are still building, or if
    >they have eggs/offspring, but they were busy yesterday trying to keep a
    >Red-Tail at bay.
