A 1.5-hour visit to Tilden Park (Jewel Lake, Upper Packrat Trail) this
morning produced very few fall migrants. With the heavy fog and
westerly winds I was hoping to catch at least a few flycatchers and
maybe a warbler species other than yellow (which I've heard the past 2
weeks in the trees outside my house), but it was not to be. I only
saw/heard 2-3 Yellow Warblers, 1 Warbling Vireo, and 1 Western Tanager
(heard only). Also, there were several Swainson's (?) Thrushes calling
in the understory in the boardwalk area. I didn't get any visuals of
these so am not 100% confident they were indeed Swainson's (do Hermit
Thrushes occur here?). The most interesting observation was an immature
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK being mobbed by 5-6 Stellar's Jays in the willows
south of the lake (visible from the northern end of the wooden
boardwalk). I'm no expert at accipiter ID but it was a small bird
(kestrel-sized) with a very square-shaped tail. Nothing much else to
report, except for the usual resident species (i.e., chickadees,
robins, jays, Winter Wren, Red-breasted Nuthatch, etc.).
