Hi E. B. Birders,
I birded Valle Vista Staging Area in Moraga yesterday morning in the fog. There was nothing unusual to report, but I saw 2 first fall Townsend's Warblers, my first of the season, in the hills above the parking lot.
Back on the lower trail which goes through the pines there was a male Western Tanager. Directly behind him was a female Black-headed Grosbeak feeding a begging fledgling, which was still very fluffy and awkward. Other juvenile birds included an inquisitive Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, spotted Western Bluebird young still being fed by the male, Purple Finch, a spotted American Robin, and a fluffy Brown Creeper, which wasn't very adept at creeping and foraging at the same time. Lots of fighting, between adult an young Hutton's Vireos and Wilson's Warblers, too.
Single Yellow and Orange-crowned Warblers were also nearby.
On a much stranger note, last Sunday, around midnight, I added a new species to my yard list. An adult Caspian Tern and begging young, both vocalizing, flew past my open window. I seem to be on a flight path between the Lafayette Reservoir and Upper San Leandro Reservoir, but I have no idea why these birds where flying at night.
All the Best Birding,
Denise Wight
