... which made me laugh out loud in rueful recognition. 'Course, I had to read it this morning, because I was out at Point Reyes all day yesterday.

Chestnut-sided Warbler

Hello everyone,

This morning I birded the Point Isabel area and then Point Pinole Regional Shoreline, both in Richmond. First I walked the path north from Point Isabel Regional Shoreline north to a little bit past the trail to S 51st St, as the fennel and Coyote Brush sometimes have migrants. Today it was very quiet with a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher and a few Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warblers. Surf Scoter numbers have begun to climb with about 400 out on the bay.

I then went to check a clump at Point Pinole that I have suspected must get vagrants at least on occasion. Almost all of the park is eucalyptus, but there is a spot that borders the railroad tracks that has a lot of ornamental trees. The first bird I saw was a young Chestnut-sided Warbler, the first for the Richmond area and only my second for the county. Other birds in the area included Nuttall's Woodpecker, Brown Creeper, Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Western Wood-Pewee, Hermit Thrush, and an Ash-throated Flycatcher. To get to this spot go across the bridge near the parking lot. Just after you cross the bridge you will come to an open area with a lot of picnic tables. On your right will be a line of 3 outhouses. Here a road goes off to the right. Take this. You will shortly come to a T intersection. Take the right fork. Just after you take this fork, you will come to a right turn where the field has been burned. This turn will take you into the area with the ornamental trees. The warbler was on the right just before the bridge where the trail deadends.

Good luck,
Steve Glover
