Arctic Tern Success

On Wednesday afternoon the first successful hatching of an Arctic Tern X Forster's Tern occured at Hayward Shoreline. We were wondering whether the eggs would be viable and are quite pleased.
Bob Richmond, who found the nest, has noted that the Arctic is more aggressive than the Forster's and is inclined to steal their food. This should benefit the Arctic as there are still a large number of Forster's carrying fish to the island.
Unfortunately, the view of the nest from the trail is blocked by a clump of pickleweed and until the chick(s) are more mobile in a couple of weeks there is still nothing to see.

On Wednesday the two Arctic Tern X Forster's Tern eggs had produced one chick. When Bob Richmond checked today the "two" eggs had produced three chicks. They were hiding something.

This morning Ore Carmi and I birded an area near the Skyline Staging Area of Redwood Regional Park in the Oakland Hills. The Stream Trail is closed at this end for much of the month for maintenance work, so we birded a short distance along the West Ridge Trail. There was quite a lot of bird activity. As usual, most of the voice IDs are by Ore.

This is a belated report on birding along Nimitz Way north of Inspiration Point in Tilden Regional Park by myself and Ore Carmi on the morning of July 4. The list is very similar to my solo list of a week before, but Ore's good ears got us a few more species. The Lawrence's Goldfinches were still feeding on the ground near the trail (on the left before reaching the power lines). Ore heard and spotted a MacGillivray's Warbler far out along the trail but I never managed to hear or see it myself. Here's our list:
Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) - flyover
Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura)
Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)
California Quail (Callipepla californica)
Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura)
Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) - heard only
Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna)
Nuttall's Woodpecker (Picoides nuttallii) - heard only
Hairy Woodpecker (Picoides villosus)
Olive-sided Flycatcher (Contopus cooperi)
Western Wood-Pewee (Contopus sordidulus) - heard only
Pacific-slope Flycatcher (Empidonax difficilis) - heard only
Ash-throated Flycatcher (Myiarchus cinerascens) - heard only
Hutton's Vireo (Vireo huttoni)
Steller's Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri) - heard only
Western Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma californica)
Common Raven (Corvus corax)
Violet-green Swallow (Tachycineta thalassina)
Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota)
Chestnut-backed Chickadee (Poecile rufescens)
Bushtit (Psaltriparus minimus)
Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis)

This is a great walk if you have trouble with ups and downs - it's even wheelchair accessible. Wonderful views as well as great birding in a variety of habitats.
Best wishes, Larry
