Copulating White-throated Swifts

A pair of copulating White-throated Swifts put on rather a show at the plaza in front of Oakland City Hall yesterday (6/10) at 4:30 PM. Three times they made the "falling tumbling star." The third time they seperated at knee level right in front of a woman who was walking. She was startled, stopped suddenly with an astounded look on her face, then watched the two swifts climb away at high speed.

Ok, I will keep my enthusiasm about the revised National Geographic Guide to myself and will say no more about the topic (but pssst - how about those descriptions of East Bay birds? :-) )
That said, let me now inform people that no sooner did I ask the question about the "overwintering" Steller's Jays in our back yard than they disappeared. They must have been reading over my shoulder.

Today, as Steve Hayashi and I drove by San Pablo Reservoir, we had a flyover flock of 30 to 40 American White Pelicans.

Rusty Scalf sends the following report of the Golden Gate Audubon Society fieldtrip this morning to Leona Heights Regional Open Space.
Cool sunny day. Beautiful. 21 people attended. It was a bit of a struggle to see birds at times, though we eventually got good looks at some of them. We hiked all the way to Merritt College and back. We got good in-the-scope views of Pacific-slope Flycatcher, which was nice. Lots of singing going on. The MacGillivray's Warbler uses precisely the same song perches as two years ago - must be the same guy. Oddly, Western Wood-Pewee was never seen or heard.Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii)
