Allen's Hummingbird nesting

This message is being forwarded to the list for Pamela Llewellyn:
I have an Allen's Hummingbird nesting in one of the redwood trees in my back yard approximately seven feet up from the base of the tree. I first noticed her feeding a fledgling and later discovered that she is simultaneously incubating two eggs (obviously not at exactly the same time). The fledgling can fly but is still asking (and receiving) food from the mother.

I went to Patterson Pass Rd east of Livermore at the 6.21 mile post at 7:45 this morning, hoping to hear the Blue Grosbeak singing. At 8:10 AM I heard a chink! and found a male on an exposed branch.
Great! Good birding for you. Whoohoo! I visited the same spot about 7:30 AM Saturday April 25th. No Blue Grosbeak for me. But is always better when others can see Patterson Pass Blue Grosbeak and the beauty of this species. It is my favorite summer visitor - sorta like an old friend coming to visit. Up the creek drainage at Mile Post 5.20 I had three Western Tanagers feeding on the new cottonwood shoots Saturday.
On April 17 here was Western Tanager, Bullock's Orioles and Black-headed Grosbeak and of course the Blue Grosbeak you found Friday. Did you hear him sing or was he doing his chink-note call?

Yellow-breasted Chat near Livermore

This morning in a steep sagebrush canyon I heard Yellow-breasted Chat. I found the bird in the north entrance of Del Valle Regional Park. Although I tried for about 45 minutes, I could not make a visual identification. The bird was "singing" the entire time and was frequently moving. To get to the location, go to the north entrance to Del Valle park at the end of Arroyo Rd. From the parking area take the main trail, cross the creek and go through the gate. When the main trail starts up the hill, take the single track trail off to the left near some buckeye trees. Follow the trail up the canyon until you reach the sage. Don't know if the bird was just passing through or not but it might be worth a try for some one that doesn't need to work tomorrow.

What happened at Piper Slough on Bethel Island
Sun, 25 Apr 2004 21:00:31 -0700

Well I got a nice shock today - Piper Slough is no longer accessible at the north end of Bethel Island Rd! What a bummer! I must admit it has been a few years since I have been able to revisit this location and I have been out of the loop. So I guess it is closed to the public because it is now a hunters club?! How the heck did that happen - was it not East Bay Regional Park District land at one time? Anyway yesterday and today I birded from the road in this area. Got excellent views of a 2 separate male Black-chinned Hummingbirds on the telephone wires adjacent to the houses. Also got a fleeting view of a male Blue Grosbeak flying from thicket to thicket. Saw and heard a solitary Yellow-breasted Chat. Lots of great views of swallows and other summer residents. I also had a flyby Blue-winged Teal on Jersey Island Rd. Any alternatives to this area?
Thanks!
