Crab Cove, Alameda

Friday, November 7, while walking at Crab Cove (northwest end of Crown Memorial State Beach, Alameda), I saw my first Eared Grebe of the season. A little later a female Bufflehead flew into the pond with the Mallards.

Otherwise, the usual suspects: gull sp., Double-crested Cormorants, Mallards, House Sparrows, American Robins, European Starlings, Mourning Doves, and a Great Egret.

There were two immature Lapland Longspurs together at Mt Trashmore in Hayward Regional Shoreline this morning, around 10:15 AM. Neither one was the bird Bob Lewis photographed earlier in the week, posted on Joe Morlan's photo page.

Hayward Regional Shoreline

Hi Birders.

I was surprised to see a Clapper Rail swimming across the flood control channel (about two-thirds of the way to the Bay) at the W Winton Ave area of Hayward Regional Shoreline late this afternoon.

Four Lapland Longspurs (in the eastern part) and two Chestnut-collared Longspurs (in the northwest area) were at Mt Trashmore. Thanks to Keith Kwan for finding them.

Five Canada Geese, all with white or buffy neck-rings and relatively short necks, appeared on Mt Trashmore late in the afternoon. Not having Sibley's guide with me, I was not aware of other field marks to check. However, he says that neck-rings occur only infrequently in populations other than Aleutian, so I assume that's what these were.

Good birding,
Emily Serkin

Sage Thrasher continues near Livermore

Hi all,

The Sage Thrasher continues north of Livermore in Alameda County today. I saw the bird perched at around 10 or 11 AM on top of the makeshift fence with the orange plastic netting, which runs east from Dagnino Rd 0.65 mile north of May School Rd.
