Don't forget the bird walk that Lillian Fujii and Steve Hayashi will be leading in the area next Sunday. It should be an interesting morning.

A primary emphasis of the Sunday walk will be on the Albany Plateau, a site "planned" to be extensively converted into formal ball playing fields under the aegis of the new Eastshore State Park.

We'll want to understand what it is we'll be losing - what the impacts will be on the plateau as a "natural area" (yes; it's landfill, and seems to the casual observer to be devoid of any redeeming natural-history qualities, but that may just be an illusion - come evaluate it for yourself).

The story being told to the park planners is that kids and teachers don't want or need a large open area where they can learn some sound natural history in a setting which can be experimented with - that only ball fields will suffice. What a sad commentary on both the parents, and on the futures of the kids.

If someone could catch the bird, I bet one of the local wildlife rehabilitation places might take it (i.e. Lindsey Museum in Walnut Creek or Wildcare in San Rafael).

P.S.  I would be willing to take it to Wildcare (I used to work there) if someone can catch it.

The Northern Bobwhite is considered a migratory game bird. Unless California has a regulation permitting its hunting or capture at this time of year, chasing or catching it would technically be a violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty. I'd suggest consulting a wildlife rehabilitation center or the state authorities before undertaking this project.

Best wishes, Larry

Re: April 14 birdwalk at Albany Bulb/Plateau

Sorry for not providing full details about where/when on the April 14 birdwalk... Here they are. Peter

A birding field trip, sponsored by Golden Gate Audubon Society, is open to anyone concerned in the future (lost) uses of the Albany Plateau.

Sunday, April 14, Albany Bulb and Plateau. Meet at 8:30 AM at the end of Buchanan Street (next to the race track) for this half-day trip. The Albany Bulb and Plateau is a part of the Eastshore State Park, currently in its planning stage. This area is one of the precious few remaining undeveloped areas in the East Bay fog belt habitat zone. Breeding birds will be singing and migrants should still be passing through. Heavy rain cancels. All welcome. Leaders: Lillian Fujii and Steve Hayashi 510.236.4167.

Well, we definitely don't want to do that (violate the Migratory Bird Treaty Act). I only made the suggestion because someone said it might be pet bird that got loose.

Actually I don't think the Northern Bobwhite is covered under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act which does not include game-birds. The full list of birds covered under the act is at:

I believe the Northern Bobwhite is classified as a game-bird and is covered under different laws.

Great Horned Owl

Today, a Great Horned Owl landed on my neighbor's roof and preened itself for about 10 minutes. I live just at the foot of hills, Richmond/El Cerrito border.
