Dusky-capped Flycatcher query
Tue, 2 Apr 2002 22:32:36 PST
From: Steve Glover

Hello all,

I am hoping some of you out there can help me with a few questions. Unquestionably the highlight of the winter in the East Bay was the Dusky-capped Flycatcher found on the Oakland Christmas Bird Count on December 16. What I need to know is, who was the original finder and what was the last date it was reported? The last sighting I know of was January 20 by Jay Withgott. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hayward Regional Shoreline
Thu, 4 Apr 2002 14:39:49 PST
From: Bob Richmond

Today at Hayward Regional Shoreline:

White-breasted Nuthatch - 1 at Winton Ave trailhead. This is the first I have seen at the shoreline.
Cedar Waxwings - dozens - formerly rare, but not for the last 5+ years in spring.
Snow Goose - 1 at San Lorenzo Community Park
Ross' Goose - 1 at San Lorenzo Community Park

(I am checking to see when the Ross' Goose will leave. The Snow Goose has left as late as early to mid May. The Snow Goose also migrates back here early in fall - mid to late September last fall.)

Tilden Regional Park Nature Area
Thu, 04 Apr 2002 21:00:15 -0800
From: Larry Tunstall

On Alan Kaplan's early morning birdwalk today at Tilden Regional Park Nature Area in the Berkeley Hills, highlights included a pair of baby Allen's Hummingbirds in a nest, and the first Black-headed Grosbeak any of us had heard at Tilden yet this year (it was singing somewhere down toward Jewel Lake - none of us saw it). Wilson's Warblers and Orange-crowned Warblers were singing everywhere, and a few Townsend's Warblers were still around.

Alan said he had first seen eggs in the hummingbird nest on March 6 and nestlings on March 29.

Here's my best attempt at a composite group list for the morning:

Double-crested Cormorant (flyover)
Mallard
Bufflehead (male in Jewel Lake)
Red-shouldered Hawk (heard calling)
Mourning Dove (heard)
Anna's Hummingbird
Rufous Hummingbird (probably - mostly rufous back)
Allen's Hummingbird (nesting)
Nuttall's Woodpecker
Downy Woodpecker
Northern Flicker (heard)
Pacific-slope Flycatcher (heard singing)
Black Phoebe (two at Jewel Lake)
Hutton's Vireo
Steller's Jay (one seen carrying nesting material)
Common Raven
Chestnut-backed Chickadee
Oak Titmouse
Bushtit
Red-breasted Nuthatch (heard)
Brown Creeper (two seen together)
Bewick's Wren (heard singing)
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
American Robin
Wrentit
Orange-crowned Warbler
Townsend's Warbler
Wilson's Warbler
Spotted Towhee
Song Sparrow
White-crowned Sparrow
Golden-crowned Sparrow
Dark-eyed Junco
Black-headed Grosbeak (heard singing)

On Tuesday morning, Karen Peterson and I saw/heard most of these same birds (but not the grosbeak), including a Hutton's Vireo gathering nest material. In addition, we saw Fox Sparrow and heard Purple Finch singing.

Good birding, Larry

Barn Swallow query
Fri, 5 Apr 2002 11:44:58 PST
From: Steve Glover

Hello all,

This winter saw an unprecedented invasion of Barn Swallows to Northern California, including some in Contra Costa County. Were any found in Alameda County during December or January? I think some were seen on the Hayward Christmas Bird Count but can't remember how many.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Missing European Goshawk
Fri, 5 Apr 2002 15:24:05 -0800
From: Janet Hanson

Jeff Diaz, local falconer, lost male European Goshawk named Rex at Newby Island Landfill, Milpitas, on March 29. There's been a probable sighting near Coyote Creek Field Station.

He is the size of a big female Cooper's Hawk, breast is grey horizontal banded, brown on the back, very long tail, missing 5 tail feathers on the left side. May or may not have jesses, but is banded. He will come to lure or fist.

If seen, call 650.969.7045 or Jeff's cell 650.248.6392 or friend Tony 408.607.3216

Rex has been working for the Air Force doing bird pest control and has been directly involved in war against terrorism. Reward of $1,000 for sighting leading to live recovery.
