Banding warblers at Jewel Lake
Tue, 15 May 2001 10:42:37 -0700
From: Erik Stromberg

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about banding Wilson's Warblers at Jewel Lake [Tilden Regional Park, Berkeley Hills]. I saw two males color banded. One with L-Silver, R-Red/Black. I would be interested in hearing more about it.

Thanks,
Erik

Bill Gilbert has been studying both Orange-crowned and Wilson's Warblers at Tilden Regional Park for many years.

One of Bob Richmond's Cattle Egrets was foraging this afternoon near the end of West Winton Ave. From the parking lot walk south along "Mount T" (the old capped landfill). The bird was on the left side of the road in the vegetated mounds between the road and the City ponds.

Pygmy Nuthatches in Tilden Regional Park
Wed, 16 May 2001 17:43:20 -0700
From: Larry Tunstall

Alan Kaplan writes:

Phila Rogers called yesterday (May 15, 2001) to say she saw Pygmy Nuthatches nesting in a snag on the Sibley trail close to its intersection with Golf Course Road (near Centennial Drive). She watched them with binocs for quite awhile and is fairly certain of the identification.

Golf Course Rd and Centennial Dr intersect Grizzly peak Blvd near the southwestern corner of Tilden Regional Park. I assume that the trail involved is Selby Trail, which connects to Grizzly Peak Trail at Golf Course Rd.

Alan suggested posting this information to the list.

From: Larry Tunstall

Hi EBBirders,

Linda Brownstein reports that a pair of White-tailed Kites are nesting in an acacia tree in her back yard in Berkeley. The tree is located just north of Virginia St, between 4th and 5th Sts, in Berkeley. The birds can be viewed flying to and from the nest, from 4th St, 5th St, or Virginia. Please do not enter private property when viewing the birds.

Thanks, Larry

Hmmm, there were 27 ibises (ibi?) in all at the Alviso location [Santa Clara County] where the Glossy Ibis was on Tuesday morning. If someone located this flock, you might find a new county record in the group.... I haven't seen or heard any reports of the Glossy Ibis in Alviso since late Tuesday.

White-throated Swift in Berkeley
Thu, 17 May 2001 19:15:10 -0700
From: Tom Condit

While out shopping this evening (Thursday, 17 May 2001) I took a stroll down the 1600 block of Berkeley Way in Berkeley just in case the Costa's Hummingbird was out and about. I didn't see it, although I did see a very nice little flock of (Lesser?) Goldfinches in the same area. I didn't have my binoculars with me, but I didn't need them to identify a White-throated Swift flying over, wheeling several times, then flying northward. Both the white throat and belly and the white rump patches were clearly visible in the late afternoon light. I don't think I've ever seen one in Berkeley before.
