Fri, 23 Mar 2001 09:11:52 PST
From: Bill Scoggins
A male Hooded Oriole arrived at my feeder this morning; this is the first oriole I have seen this year. A pair nested across the street last year in a fan palm and raised two sets of young.
Nuttall's Woodpecker also in my yard this morning in an ash tree.
Best regards and happy Spring,

From: Don Lewis
A Chipping Sparrow was at my feeder, or rather at seed spread on my deck, this morning. A yard first for me, after 5 years in Lafayette and 18 in Moraga, although they are present in small numbers some summers at Valle Vista and Rancho Laguna in Moraga.

Raptor Observatory seeks volunteers
Each autumn, tens of thousands of hawks, falcons, and eagles pass over the Marin Headlands. Since 1983, the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory has organized volunteers to conduct ground counts, banding and radiotracking studies in order to monitor the health of these magnificent birds of prey. We're looking for new recruits to volunteer for the August through December 2001 season. If you think you might be interested, come to one of three Recruitment Classes: Wednesday, April 25, or Thursday, April 26, from 7:00 to 9:30 PM; or Saturday, April 28, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM. All meetings will be held at Golden Gate National Recreation Area headquarters, Building 201 at Upper Fort Mason, in San Francisco. Enter the fort at Franklin and Bay. For more information, call the GGRO at 415.331.0730. Visit GGRO's website at

Lawrence's Goldfinch at Sunol Wilderness
Fri, 30 Mar 2001 10:33:55 -0800
From: Don Lewis
Thursday morning, March 29, at 9 AM, there was a male Lawrence's Goldfinch at the upper parking lot in Sunol Regional Wilderness, Alameda County.
A ranger reported seeing a Greater Roadrunner along the Ohlone road but we didn't get the specific location.
Birds were few on the way to and from Little Yosemite along the road. One oriole was present at the visitor center. Lots of House Wrens everywhere.
