Hayward Shoreline

From: Bob Richmond
Today at the Hayward Shoreline the following was seen
Black Skimmer - 2.
Eared Grebe - 2 pairs with chicks; one had 3 and the other had 2. The 2 pairs in mid-May may be a second clutch of the same birds. Eared Grebe chicks appear to be independent of the adults well before they fledge.
Lesser Scaup - 2 females with ducklings; one had 8 and the other had 2. The first one is the same as last week but without the Mallard/Gadwall duckling. The one with 2 was not seen last week. The one with 1 duckling seen last week, was not seen today.
Arctic Tern - 0, not seen today.
Blue-winged Teal - 8 (4 males, 2 females, 2 females or adult sized young).
Good birding

Snowy Egrets
at Hayward Shoreline

An interesting sight today, at Hayward Regional Shoreline, was over 175 Snowy Egrets in one place. They were there in large numbers the previous morning also.
The group was feeding with American White Pelicans in the shallow marsh just north of the radio towers at the end of West Winton Ave. Apparently, a run of small fish has entered the marsh through a small feeder culvert that someone has propped open.

Subject: [SBB] Clapper Rail at A's Game, 7-8-2000I don't know how many of you were watching the Oakland A's play baseball on Saturday night, but they had a bird on the playing field that night. A close up of this bird showed it to be a Clapper Rail. I know that these birds are prone to dispersal, especially in the fall (they have even been found on street corners in San Francisco), but this seems like an early date. Still, I suppose that it was just a dispersant juvenile.
On another note, I heard from Vickie Sivas-Young that she had a Golden-crowned Sparrow singing at CCFS last Wednesday.

Martin Luther King Shoreline, Sunday

From: Courtenay Peddle
Hello folks,
Mike McClaskey, Emily Strauss, Sally Walters, Don Schmoldt and I spent an enjoyable couple of hours at Arrowhead and Mitigation marshes, in Martin Luther King Jr Regional Shoreline in Oakland Sunday morning, as the tide was ebbing. The shorebird migration is picking up speed. We saw our first Semipalmated Plovers of the season.
And were lucky enough to see two juvenile Clapper Rails in the channel that parallels the path, between the bridge and the boardwalk. I believe the other young were seen in a different territory, visible from the end of the boardwalk. If this is not correct, would someone please let me know, because I now think we have confirmation of more than one breeding pair.

Shorebirds at Albany Mudflats
Mon, 10 Jul 2000 15:18:07 -0700 (PDT)
From: Karen Peterson
I briefly stopped by the Berkeley end of the Albany mudflats about 11:00 AM this morning, and everyone seems to be back, looking spiffy still in their breeding plumage, particularly the Black-bellied Plovers. The Least Terns were fishing, and there was (were?) a pair of Scaup. There were also about 50 European Starlings, possibly passing through.

To: NBBHi Birders,
While "channel surfing" Saturday night, I tuned into the A's vs Diamondbacks game at Oakland Coliseum. The A's had rallied from behind to tie, and the game went into extra innings. Then the camera crew showed some incredible views of an avian spectator "watching" the game from the mowed field level - a Clapper Rail!! It was about 9:45 PM. Perhaps the clapping and applause had attracted it (ha-ha). While I've heard stories occasionally of rails stranding themselves in parking lots and such, this one was quite humorous. The remodeled coliseum has a high rim encircling it, so it had to fly pretty high (for a rail species) to make it in. Perhaps the bright light confused it too. Regardless, I thought I would pass this one along for the "bird funnies."
P.S. There were something over 54,000 fans there, and the A's eventually won.
