I birded Miller/Knox Regional Park [Point Richmond] on February 29 and was surprised to see a Rufous Hummingbird after hearing what I thought was an Allen's Hummingbird (which were also present), zipping around and seems newly arrived.

Hayward Shoreline Surfbirds

This season at the Hayward Regional Shoreline has been fairly slow except for Surfbirds. In the 1980's there was only one record. They became more and more common in the 1990's, mostly in fall along with a few spring records. This winter up to 5 have been seen in several areas of the Hayward Shoreline, on an incomming tide (at least half-way in). Probably the best area is at Hayward's Landing, reached from the end of West Winton Ave.

This morning, at high tide I saw 18 Surfbirds roosting in the riprap just south of Point Emery in Emeryville. There was a Pelagic Cormorant in alternate plumage near Trader Vic's Restaurant off of Powell Street. Yesterday, I observed an Anna's Hummingbird collecting nest material by my Berkeley residence. This is the third year I've seen her gather the downy fluff produced by Japanese anemonoes that have been left to go to seed.
