Band-tail surprise: On the Mott Trail at Briones Regional Park near Martinez, Cliff Warner was hiking up to Mott Peak when an estimated 5,000 band-tailed pigeons erupted from under the oaks. "They were feeding on the plentiful acorn crop from the fall," Warner said. Band-tails are migratory nomads, that is, they will roam wherever they can find acorns or mineral springs.
