I walked through San Pablo Park yesterday and saw that the Sycamore in which Western Bluebirds have nested the past two springs has been trimmed by the city. The woodpecker hole is gone; In fact all the woodpecker holes in all the Sycamores are gone.

I called the Berkeley tree maintenance office and they told me that every Sycamore in the city is currently being ?cleaned up?. Given that this is a major street tree in north Berkeley, there will a lot of urban nesting Nuthatches, Chickadees and Titmice without nest sites.

I asked permission to put up a nest box on the bluebird tree and the lady told me that I?d have to call back Tuesday to obtain it. I?ll do so. I want to keep the San Pablo Park Bluebirds going.
