Today during a lunchtime visit to Black Diamond Mines R. P. we
observed a Red-breasted Sapsucker and a female Phainopepla. The
sapsucker was first observed flying among the Ailanthus trees that
surround the upper parking lot. The Phainopepla was observed midway
along a trail that leaves the picnic area on the west side of the
parking lot and proceeds south, paralleling the maintenance road from
the parking lot. (We could not find a name for this short trail.)
Along this trail we also refound the sapsucker. In the past we have
observed a female Phainopepla eating mistletoe berries in a large
coast live oak tree located on the west side of the upper parking lot.

    Good birding,
