Anyone who loves birds is naturally driven to want to help a bird that is in trouble. Often, hurt birds manage to get by in the wild even when pierced by fish hooks or suffering from injuries or illnesses. They are not debilitated enough or in a place where they can be caught even if resources are available to catch them. Most wildlife rehabilitation facilities are volunteer organizations that do not have resources to go out on rescue missions, and, of course, one must weigh the likelihood of capture against the cost of traumatizing the animal by trying to capture it. I would suggest you contact International Bird Rescue Research Center at 707-207-0380 to get advice regarding the great blue heron's specific situation. Their web site is http://www.ibrrc.org/handling_birds.html.
