Having canceled Monday's planned bicycle trip due to impending rain, Susan
Groves and I rode the Alameda Creek Trail from the BART weir to Coyote Hills
and back to Decoto Rd on Sat afternoon. We stayed only on the
paved (southern) side of the trail, went across the marsh at Coyote Hills to
the Quarry Staging area, then to the visitor center and then back to the paved
trail. If we had gone much earlier we would have ridden out to the bay and probably would have seen a number of shorebirds. As it was, it was dark by the time we returned to Oakland. Surprisingly we saw 45 species on this overcast day. We noted that there
were no Tree Swallows at any of the boxes at Coyote Hills, nor did we see any
anywhere; this is in response to the EBB report that someone had seen them in
central Fremont. The Cinnamon Teals were seen only in the marsh at Coyote Hills, not on the creek. At the Quarry Staging area we saw the WC and GC Sparrows and the N Flicker but did not see the BG Gnatcatcher reported by others.
