This morning at Tilden Park's Jewel Lake, I observed the 4 otters eating
fish and crayfish. While I was looking at the otters, Patty Kline spotted
a bird with a long, decurved orange bill that flushed into the reeds 15
feet in front of the bench on the east side of the lake. I didn't see the
bird but from Patty's description, it must be a Virginia Rail. Please
keep your ears open for a rail call if your birding and ottering at the
lake this dusk or early dawn. The goldeneyes were not observed but the
male and female Buffleheads and resident Belted Kingfisher were present
along with a small flock of Band-tailed Pigeons that landed in the
eucalyptus just east of the lake.
